Barts Health is one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers, serving 2.5m patients. It specialises in heart and cancer services, with some of the most advanced healthcare equipment and devices.

It has set up carbon reduction targets, from 2018 levels:

  • 67% reduction in CORE emissions (by 2032)
  • 50% reduction in energy and water emissions
  • 75% reduction in emissions from business and patient transport
  • 25% reduction in emissions from waste.

All of these have a 2030 deadline.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was ranked as number one in our ‘Top 10 Hospitals in the World’, as it is widely regarded as being one of the best hospitals in the world. It specialises in gynaecology, neurology and neurosurgery, and was the first hospital in the world to perform male-female sex reassignment surgery.

LevelTen Energy, a US-based startup enables organisations to purchase renewable energy, recently announced it was working with the Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation in Baltimore to help the organisation tackle its carbon emissions.

Founded in 1921, Cleveland Clinic is one of the most respected hospitals in the USA. It has eight regional hospitals, 16 family health centres and a children’s hospital for rehabilitation, which are all run on the principles of cooperation, compassion and innovation.

The hospital celebrated Earth Day by encouraging staff to make Earth-conscious choices.

“There are a variety of actions that any individual can take to benefit the environment and their health,” explained Ilyssa Gordon, Medical Director of Sustainability at Cleveland Clinic. “Some of these include eating a plant-forward diet, which is high in fruits and vegetables, as well as choosing to bike or walk to work and other activities when possible. Just simply getting out in nature can also be beneficial.”

As one of America’s biggest nonprofit healthcare businesses, Kaiser Permanente is carbon neutral and is one of the largest users of renewable energy in the USA healthcare sector.

“One of the most effective ways to protect the health of the more than 68mn people in the communities we serve is by ensuring healthy environmental conditions,” said Bernard J. Tyson, then-Chairman and CEO. “By investing in renewable energy and becoming carbon neutral, Kaiser Permanente is helping to prevent climate-related illness for people worldwide.”
