Towards Sustainable Healthcare India Embraces Green Initiatives For A Greener Future

The healthcare industry in India is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by technological advancements and a global focus on sustainability. Recognising the need to reduce its environmental impact, healthcare organisations are increasingly adopting eco-friendly practices.

In a panel discussion on sustainability and energy efficiency held at BW Healthcare World’s Annual Summit & Awards, industry leaders shared their insights on the adoption of green technologies and initiatives to promote a more sustainable future for healthcare facilities in India

Dr Sanjeev K. Singh, the Medical Director at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, India, highlighted the importance of designing hospitals with sustainability in mind. By focusing on optimising wall and roof insulation, glazing, natural ventilation, efficient lighting, and energy-efficient appliances, existing hospitals can achieve energy savings of up to 60 per cent.

Incorporating renewable energy sources like solar panels and solar hot water systems further contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of healthcare facilities. Ravjot Singh Arora, Director of Medulance, emphasised the importance of sustainability initiatives in medical transportation. To address the issue of biomedical waste, the organisation strictly adheres to government regulations. Furthermore, Medulance focuses on refurbishing and recycling medical equipment to extend their lifespan, reducing waste generation. The company is also exploring sustainable transportation options, such as using buses to transport people instead of relying on individual cars.

In terms of corporate strategies, Dr Sanjeev K. Singh emphasised the significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. A not-for-profit organisation, AIMS is committed to creating awareness, implementing best practices, and reducing carbon emissions. Collaboration with public health foundations and the Ministry of Health has been instrumental in achieving these goals. Additionally, Amrita prioritises patient rights and participation in decision-making, while also promoting diversity and transparency within the healthcare system.

Medulance, with its vast network of ambulances across the country, focuses on reducing carbon emissions by dispatching the nearest ambulance to patients. While exploring alternative fuels like CNG and hydrogen, the organisation acknowledges the limitations of electric vehicles (EVs) for long-distance patient transportation due to energy loss concerns.

However, Medulance is actively working with EV and EV truck companies to pilot EV ambulances in cities with adequate infrastructure. To reduce their environmental footprint, hospitals can implement several best practices and initiatives. Dr Sanjeev K Singh stressed the importance of engaging with the community, conducting cleanliness drives, and participating in tree-planting activities.

These efforts foster a sense of environmental responsibility and create a healthier ecosystem within and around healthcare facilities. In terms of creating a sustainable and healthy workplace ecosystem, Medulance focuses on mental wellness programs for its employees.

Additionally, the organisation goes the extra mile to ensure that employees receive necessary medical treatments by establishing communication channels with their families and offering compensation when required.

As the healthcare industry in India continues to grow, the integration of sustainability and energy efficiency practices is crucial. By adopting green technologies, reducing carbon emissions, and implementing initiatives that prioritise the well-being of both the environment and individuals, healthcare facilities can contribute to a more sustainable future. Through collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, the industry can pave the way for a greener and healthier India.
